An infographic doesn’t have to have clever art effects to tell a good story. This one in particular depends on diagrams and documentary photography to make it’s case for clarity and storytelling. I call the photography “documentary” to note that there are no special filters and effects used, and some of the photographs look as if they were taken with consumer-grade cameras or quickly, at the moment.
Even the typographic treatment uses one typeface throughout, with only one phrase (THE FLIGHT OF APOLLO 13) in another typeface.
Looking to tell a powerful story without “chart junk” is often more difficult than overloading an image.
The telling of an emotionally engaging story, however, should be the guiding principle of any infographic.
