Science of Habit

Habits are called “good” or “bad”, and Addictions are almost always considered, “BAD”. But what about addiction to being a life-long learner? Or practicing a craft or skill that produces art, or scientific discovery, or successful businesses?

MARCOM professionals are harnessing AI to turn their attention to consumer interests to design marketing programs that move the casual customer/client into the habitual one, perhaps even an addicted one, so this could be a very relevant starting place to learn how that progresses in human behavior.

Some considerations, though, first:

Perhaps we need to rethink what the “work” addiction is and where it came from. Or, how it became considered an unhealthy addiction.

While this infographic contains some quick bites of fact nuggets that are probably both biased and incomplete (why are work and shopping both habits and addictions? And why is the icon representing MUSIC backwards?), there is enough science to consider how to design a learning program that uses gamification through rewards that would produce a habit…and perhaps an addiction?

An interesting thought for visual thinkers/program designers. And, of course, marketers.

Build a CUE, ROUTINE (or BEHAVIOR/ACTION) and REWARD cycle.

This is where the nature of human response to visuals (both still and moving) plays such a strong part in the CUE building phase, and typically has a built in oxytosin-reward as well.
