In this new data visualization by Matthew C. Klein – “How Americans Die,”  created for Bloomberg View, you can explore the changing nature of American mortality. Also not the method he uses of leading you through discovery (including some possibly surprising conclusions) while allowing you to stop and review details along the way. Data sources are not only cited, but often links are provided back to the original online source.

I might have liked a few of the charts to appear differently when breaking out groups, such as the stacked bar chart which indicates “What caused the surge in mortality for 25- to 44-year-olds?” The individual numbers from the two groups (25-44 year-olds and Everyone else) are given, but the total numbers are not, and when you choose to view just one or the other, the 25-44 year-olds bars do not start at the 0 point in the lower axes, which is confusing.

However, it is an interesting visualization with powerful conclusions, and a little bit of fancy movement, but no other imagery to distract the reader.
