Every SIGGRAPH has an outreach component, and this year is no different.  Information is now coming out about what they plan to do this year.

To give back to the New Orleans local community, SIGGRAPH introduces the SIGGRAPH 2009+1 Outreach program, giving people from around the globe opportunities to give back through a series of partnerships with local organizations. These outreach efforts focus on helping to educate local youth about enriching careers in technology and creative arts with a long term goal of strengthening the community as a whole by investing in this next generation.

So far they’ve announced 4 initiatives:

  • The Algiers Technical Academy is getting a new computer graphics lab, with equipment donated from Walt Disney Animation Studios and software from Autodesk
  • SIGGRAPH will be creating & selling a compilation album of music from the nearby musicians, with the funds to go to the Louis Satchmo Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp
  • SIGGRAPH is bringing 50 students from the New Orleans Center for creative Art and another 50 from the Algiers Technical Academy for a mentor/mentee day
  • SIGGRAPH will be running a mobile text message based fundraising campaign for Tipitina’s Foundation
