Will Apple make a 3-D iPod? Who knows. Will they make a 3-D iPod to counter the Nintendo 3DS? Who knows. We do know that the Nintendo 3DS is due out on February 26 in Japan. We also know that Apple is interested in 3-D technology and was recently awarded a patent. I doubt that we will see anything from Apple in this area any time in the next few months, if at all. But one industry analyst certainly thinks that Apple is developing the 3D technology to go against Nintendo. Either that, or he is trying to pump Apple’s stock price a bit. But then again, who knows?
Games industry analyst Michael Pachter thinks that Apple will develop a 3D iPod to scupper Nintendo’s first mover advantage gained with the forthcoming 3DS handheld.
hi there your right i have apple nintendo sony microsoft your right every time i go see a 3d movie like 3d avatar movie or 3d tron or 3d dispecable me and today we went too nest buy look at best buy panasonic 3d tv and cosco’s 3d tvs i am getting 3d spoiled rotton i want every thing in 3d
Apple is going to put up a good fight with casual games like angry birds or even have games like World of Goo but there is one thing they will never have: Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, Donkey Kong. These games alone will keep the 3ds relevant. The PSP2 (phone) is more of a threat by its concept but will not be able to compete because of its low fan base compared to Apple and Nintendo’s handheld platforms. Most games that will be on the psp2 will or could be on the ipod touch.
Apple will launch their new Ipods after the 3DS to steal it’s thunder.
Also, Apple is fighting too many battles. They simply cannot fight on all fronts (phone*, ereader, ipod, gaming system) The iPad is a different story but will never compete with the ds lineups.
Is Apple capable of physical buttons on a mobile device? More than the volume rocker, home button and power? For some reason I doubt it. A sliding touch would be cool, but too risky for Apple. They will not add to their capacitive screen a sliding form factor, it’s a lot to ask to go from one-piece products to sliding or flipping devices.
Interesting thought, but for the iPod to be a real threat to Nintendo it needs physical buttons. Touch and tilt games are great but for the full gaming experience nothing can beat the classic control pad and physical action buttons. I have an iPhone, I play games on it but the on screen directional pad makes greatly reduces the playability of “full length” video game such as Assasin’s Creed, Sonic or Chaos Rings.
Who knows, maybe Apple will created a modified iPod Touch with a 3D screen and a slide in control pad and call it iPod Play or something like that.
@ Luis Cortes
they might as well not try it because if the 3D turns of every time your finger touches the screen the 3D will be off alot. So the 3D will only be good for videos and movies. The 3DS can play movies and vids anyway so 3DS would beat it anyway. 🙂
Oh but I wan’t to see my CD album covers in 3D! Seriously? I don’t mean to rip on Apple but man they would be waisting precious time and money on something as stupid as this. Why can’t they just keep working on making the flash capacity larger and leave the 3D to Nintendo? I really hope this is just a rumor and not something that they are actually working on, who even wants this? I mean come on!
3D iPod? Fail!!!
Oh and by the way, why is every one calling the ipod a game system? Its an MP3 capable of running apps and games and nothing more.
Like ^ said. Nintendo already stated that a 3d touchscreen wouldn’t work. Why would Apple still try this anyway? Since the 3DS uses a pressure screen which won’t cause much disruption to the 3D effect what will some peoples big fingers do with the effect? I wouldn’t expect Apple to try and pull something off that Nintendo already researched. The only way i see possible for it to work is if every time your finger made contact with the screen, the 3D effect would turn off and then back on when the finger was removed.
3D won’t work for a ipod because apple will try to make 3D for the ipod touch that won’t work because finger prints mess up the 3D effect. Thats why nintendo only made the top screen on the 3DS 3D not the bottom touch screen. The other ipods won’t need 3D because their mainly music players
they better not make a 3d ipod, that would suck! idea stealers! even if they did it would take em another 3 years!!
and no evan if they did come out with one it would be crap compared to the 3ds
APPLE stop trying to take over the world of computers!!!!!
I have an iPhone, and 95% of the games on it are complete rubbish and I would never pay ANY money for them. However, there are some great games on it, like Super Street Fighter 4, which I nearly bought and downloaded but I’d rather wait for the 3DS version to come out (which is better) and pay extra for it. For me, the iPhone and iPod Touch will never be a substitute for a ‘proper’ handheld video games console. I’m happy to pay the extra money if I know I’m getting a superior game. Too many of the games on the iPod Tocuh and iPhone are just crappy little games cobbled together on the back of a cigarette packet in one afternoon when the developers decided to go to the pub.
LONG LIVE THE NINTENDO 3DS!
