Fangoria has an interview with Richard Wright, 3 time Underworld producer, on the special effects used in the third Underworld movie.  In the first movie, he was resolutely opposed to digital effects because he thought they looked fake and weird.  In the third movie, however, he used many digital effects for a wide variety of reasons.

“The problem,” he adds, “is that digital effects are getting so good and the price point is becoming so low that they’re kind of ‘eating everybody else’s lunch.’ What we’ve realized on this movie is where the limits of doing animatronics lie and where CGI is going to take over. I believe 30 to 40 percent of the shots that we originally thought we’d do with on-set effects were actually done that way—but then, we’ll probably redo them digitally and keep those versions. It just looks so much better.”
